terra nova
Geothermal areas and glacial streams are an ongoing manifestation of the volcanic and glacial forces that have shaped the Earth's surface over millions of years, but ones that can be experienced on a scale accessible to human experience, both spatially and temporally. In Terra Nova I respond to the contrast between the natural processes of change I observe in these terrains and the unnatural transformation of the earth due to climate change. To combat my sense of helplessness in the face of this manmade crisis, I use photography as a way to hit pause and quiet all forces. To create moments of stillness in these otherwise dynamic terrains, I reimagine and preserve these landscapes by flattening space and disguising time, scale and perspective. The resulting images present vignettes of a new topography, one firmly under my control.
